Employment & Learning

This staff’s pick is the book “Liftscripts: What to say to get what you want in life’s toughest situations.” written by Stephen M. Pollan and Mark Levine.

The authors present you with some of life’s stickiest situations and then tell you exactly how to handle it with words. The authors make this book invaluable by not assuming that the situation always involves bitterness but that something like leaving a job actually could just be a peaceful exit.

So often in communication with one another, we forget that what we say is just as important as how we say it. This book will assist you on the finer points of being nice.  Sometimes our emotions keep us from being objective about a situation, and this is why Lifescripts is so helpful.  It will teach you how to distance yourself enough to see the whole picture and then give you the words / actions necessary to properly deal with the problem.

Excerpt from Lifescript #7. Asking for a Salary Increase

Icebreaker: I’d like to thank you for the opportunity you and the company have given me. I recognize that you’ve been very influential in my growth and advancement. However, I have a problem that I need your help with.

Pitch #1: I’ve been concentrating solely on my professional growth and haven’t been paying attention to my stream of income…

Pitch #2: I think my salary no longer reflects my contribution to the company…

Pitch #3: I think my salary no longer matches my job responsibilities…

Scripts give you the most effective approach–and the actual words–to use. In the YWCA Employment and Learning Centre’s job searching techniques workshop, scripts for cold calling and networking are part of our workshop information.
