Our Focus In April is Shoulder Mobility

A preview of our Prehab Class

Shoulder mobility is the ability for the shoulders to move through a range of motion with control before being restricted. This includes having the requisite strength, coordination and body awareness along with flexibility. Shoulder mobility is a hot topic in the functional fitness (1) world. If you are going to take functional fitness seriously, it’s time for your shoulders to match the new age of movements, which means you need to be mobile, stable and strong.

Shoulder is a complex and very unique joint. It is literally a floating system of muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons and nerves that must all be firing and functioning near perfection to stay flexible, stable, strong and pain-free. Because of many functions that shoulders do and also their complex structure, it is possible to develop mobility issues in the shoulder which can result from several types of activity or inactivity. Some of the common types of shoulder mobility issuers are impingement, rotator cuff tears and frozen shoulder. Instability and overuse of the joint cause many of these mobility issues.

 

THE PREHAB & MOBILITY PROGRAM AT THE YWCA SASKATOON IS DESIGNED TO WORK ON A SPECIFIC JOINT, ITS SORROUNDING MUSCHLE GROUPS AND ALSO ITS CONNECTIVE TISSUES EACH AND EVERY MONTH TO INCREASE THE RANGE OF MOTION AND IMPROVE THE STABILITY AND THE FUNCTION OF THE JOINT.

 

The PreHab & Mobility Program at the YWCA Saskatoon will be focused on shoulders starting March 30th over the month of April for a total of 10 classes. The class will be delivered in-person on every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:45pm to 5:15pm. Drills and exercises will be varied from a class to another which would provide a unique educational opportunity for you to learn how to make sure your shoulders are mobile and functional.

Here is a sample video of what you will learn during our Prehab Classes. In this case I outline a drill called the Cuban Press…a great exercise as part of a program to improve the range of motion of this complicated joint.

 

YOU CAN’T PARTICIPATE IN THE IN-PERSON CLASSES? WE HAVE GOT YOU COVERED!

 

We record a video of the content of each class in which all drills and exercises are demonstrated and explained into detail to make sure a clear instruction is delivered. Videos are uploaded to VIDEO ON DEMAND section of our app just before the starting time of classes. So, if you were unable to participate in in-person classes, you can still access all materials and do the drills on you own at home or at the gym.

 

 

  • Functional fitness is method of exercising that trains the muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements that you might do at home, at work or in sports. For example, a squat is a functional exercise because it trains the muscles used when you rise up and down from a chair or pick up low objects.
