Week Without Violence Press Release
YWCA Canada and the World YWCA speak out against gender based violence
There are no excuses for violence against women and there are no excuses for tolerating it: this is the rallying cry for Week Without Violence, taking place October 13th through 19th, 2014. This year, YWCA Canada and its 32 member associations join the World YWCA in the “NoXcuses” campaign to end violence against women and create positive change.
“NoXcuses means ending all forms of violence against women and girls, not just for a week, but forever.” says Paulette Senior, YWCA Canada Chief Executive Officer. “Recent global prevalence figures indicate that 35% of women worldwide have experienced either intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. We need to tackle violence at the root, examine its causes, and challenge the traditions that perpetuate it beyond the Week Without Violence. The bottom line is: There is no excuse for violence against women, there is no excuse for ignoring it, and we can all make a difference to eliminate it.”
Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, World YWCA General Secretary, explains: “Violence is a violation of women’s fundamental human rights. Therefore, the slogan of our campaign, “NoXcuses”, implies that nothing can justify violence against another human being.”
