National Volunteer Week (April 18 – 24, 2021)

Employment & Learning

By Murray Gross.

As a job seeker, during the COVID -19 pandemic, looking for work can be overwhelming.  Consequently, you may feel that volunteering while job searching is not a viable option.

You may feel that your time is better spent actually looking for work…. tailoring your resume and cover letter, conducting informational interviews over the phone or Zoom, and networking via LinkedIn. Plus, volunteering is unpaid. So, what is the value in volunteering while job searching?

Networking: volunteering increases your personal and professional networks.

Job Leads: volunteering allows you to have inside knowledge on plans to hire, within the organization you volunteer.

References: volunteering, especially if you do a good job will allow you to ask and receive references from supervisors and other volunteers.

Skill Building: volunteering gives you opportunities to learn new skills and keep your existing skills sharp.

Career Exploration: volunteering allows you to consider alternative career paths, without a long-term commitment.

Character: volunteering demonstrates to potential employers that you care about others in your community and the community in general.

Improves Self Confidence and Esteem: volunteering, while job seeking offers you the opportunity to be successful and keeps you busy.

Hides Gaps in Your Resume: volunteering gives you something to say when the employer asks about ‘gaps in your resume’.

Do you Volunteer?  If the answer is yes, make sure your volunteer work is in your resume and make sure to mention your volunteer work and the skills you have during your next job interview.  Most employers respect volunteers and volunteer work, it may be the difference between you and the other candidate.
