My name is Robert Basiove, and over the course of the last few months I have been doing a practicum placement here at YWCA Saskatoon. I worked in the administration department September through December, 2015. It is difficult to capture all of what I have learned at the YWCA in a few paragraphs.
I gained both knowledge and experience during my term. I had the opportunity to develop and facilitate programming, including a workshop on feelings for the children in the Child Development Centre and a holistic wellness stress and coping workshop with some of the women staying in the Crisis Shelter & Residence. I assisted with policy work for the Fitness on 25th and social media. I also sat in on a discussion about the impacts of the Residential school system with a university professor, Gilbert Kewistep, who is a survivor of a residential school.
I would encourage anyone in need of a practicum placement to consider the YWCA with the breadth and depth of services they provide, as it is a pillar in the Saskatoon community. The knowledge, expertise, and experience of the staff would be critical to any student seeking a field education, in social work and beyond
